1) Most authors fail at book promotion because they try to be everywhere, and do All. The. Marketing. Things. The smarter approach is to apply the 80/20 rule to your marketing and only focus on the 20% of strategies that bring 80% of your results.
2) A roadmap you can use to build a more effective marketing strategy is the Expanding Universe Theory of Business. Start by targeting a small group of IDEAL readers, then expand out to a larger audience.

3) Choose 1-2 marketing strategies that you find enjoyable, and go all in on them. If your stomach fills with dread at the thought doing a certain marketing strategy—don’t do it! Here’s a screenshot of the slide we shared in the presentation to get ideas + inspiration of things you can do:
4) Again, make sure to find a marketing strategy that works for YOU, and then expand from there. Once you’ve mastered your 1-2 marketing approaches that target your IDEAL readers—you can start “expanding your universe” and spread out to a larger general audience to grow your author platform.
5) The most important thing when it comes to marketing is this: SELL YOUR BOOK TO PEOPLE WHO WANT TO BUY IT. We promise, there are tons of people out there who want to read YOUR book, and your #1 goal as an author is to find them!
Don’t waste any more time and energy selling to people who just aren’t interested in buying your book. When you sell your book to people who want to buy it, it feels so much better and will change your marketing game completely.
